I wore their names like chains on my ribs,
Packed my days in a backpack of stones.
Smiled through the rope around my chest,
Held my breath till it felt like home.
Every nod, every stare, every rule
Pressed me down through the soles of my boots.
I bent my spine to fit their mold,
Now the mold is a mouthful of truth.
